Barbados Youth Business Trust (BYBT)
The BYBT is a youth entrepreneurship development organization which provides the much needed service of turning good ideas into good businesses. BYBT assist young people to develop skills and attitude which they will need to become successful entrepreneurs.
The entrepreneurship development program helps 18 to 35 year olds who are unemployed, underemployed and of limited means including the physically challenged, to set up and run their own business by providing financial assistance, on going business advice and marketing support. Applicants who have a viable business plan, but have been unsuccessful in raising the start up capital elsewhere, are eligible to receive assistance to get their business started.
The secret of The Trust’s success is that every new business is assigned a Business Mentor – a volunteer who provides support, encouragement and advice to help the business succeed. The Trust also provides marketing and sales opportunities, including subsidized space at exhibitions, informing young entrepreneurs about training opportunities, providing grants for marketing research, educational and go and see opportunities.
Outreach
BYBT has come in contact with approximately 10, 000 young unemployed persons over the years, sensitizing them to entrepreneurship as a career option. Locations include: schools, community centres, churches, skill training centres, tertiary institutions and social development organizations.
Regional Coordination
The Trust is a centre of excellence within the YBI network, a regional resource and a lead program for the ongoing four years IDB/MIF regional project to develop young entrepreneurs. As the lead program BYBT has assisted Youth Business Programs in Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Belize, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Dominica to start their operations by training managers, business mentors and young entrepreneurs.
BYBT works with several regional partners on projects and programs relevant to youth development and sustainable livelihood including CARICOM in Haiti,.
